JetBlue Airways began direct flights from Albuquerque to New York City’s JFK Airport Monday with a celebratory maiden voyage.

Mayor Richard J. Berry announced the airline service at his last State of the City Address and ever since the good economic news has been welcomed around New Mexico.

Berry and some other city officials flew on the first flight arriving in Albuquerque Monday evening.

“Someone is willing to make an investment,” Berry said after deplaning.  “We flew on a $45 million aircraft.  We flew here because JetBlue thought it was worth their time to fly to Albuquerque.”

And if things go well for JetBlue, meaning there are more full flights than empty, the company’s CEO said Monday he would consider expanding the list of cities with nonstop service to Albuquerque.

“Cities like Boston, and the LA area are all possibilities but we need support from the community,” Dave Barger, JetBlue Airways CEO said.

City of Albuquerque Economic Development Director John Garcia said his office is actively negotiating with other airlines looking for more non-stop destinations.  Garcia wouldn’t say which airlines or which cities, but hinted at the possibility of cities in northern California.
