Aviation Police now have some answers about what caused a man to wander onto the cargo tarmac at the Albuquerque Sunport Tuesday night.

The man told police he crawled through the sewer system and popped up in a manhole on the tarmac.

A Sunport spokesman said UPS employees quickly saw the man and alerted authorities.

He told KOB that the man, identified as Robert A. Mondragon, 37, had apparently crawled through a storm drain south of the airport after becoming disoriented, tired and thirsty.

Mondragon surfaced at the airport in the southwest corner of the cargo facility, near Fedex/UPS, probably entering through an unsealed manhole.

All manhole covers in the passenger area were already secured - employees have now sealed all of them in the cargo area, the spokesman said.

Aviation police are working with the FBI and the FAA to continue investigating the case.

The spokesman confirmed that Mondragon did have a knife on him, but said police did not believe he meant to harm anyone.

Mondragon has been charged with criminal trespass.
