An Albuquerque cheerleading coach is behind bars, accused of having a sexual relationship with a 14 year-old boy.
Jimmy Mata was in court Thursday. The victim and his parents also showed.
Mata, who coached at Albuquerque High School, is 20 years-old. The boy is 14.
In court Thursday, KOB Eyewitness News 4 overheard the parents talking and at one point, the boys mom said, “no one is angry” and the “situation is an age thing.”
On the victim’s Facebook page, there’s a picture showing him and Mata smiling on the beach. But Thursday a much different look on Mata’s face.
Mata is facing eight counts of criminal sexual penetration of a minor.
The Bernalillo County Sheriff’s Department got word of the relationship Wednesday, and the victim admitted to being with the 20-year-old.
Mata told investigators he had feelings for the teen but that he was “torn because of the age gap.”
Investigators also found out Mata was living with the victim and his family.
In court, the boy’s father spoke out supporting Mata. The father even requested that bail be reduced for Mata.
Mata was contracted by Albuquerque Public Schools as a cheerleading coach and worked at different schools. But his contract with tue school district expired just four days before he was arrested.
KOB asked BCSO if Mata had relationships with any other students since he was a high school cheer coach. They said they don’t think he did.
The judge ended up reducing his bond from $200,000 to $50,000.
