For years, people in a Kirtland, NM neighborhood have lived in fear of what could happen by a nearby ditch.
"When my grandkids come around I'm constantly on edge because I have to be outside with them," said Kirtland resident Hazel Belen.
Recently, the worst did happen. A little boy fell in the ditch and was carried by the water from the cattle guard all the way to the bend.
"Another lady pulled him out and we helped in and I blew into his mouth and held him for a while and somebody called an ambulance," said Georgianna Harrison.
The boy is okay, but residents don't want to see this happen again.
With summer just around the corner neighbors are worried that more kids will be playing near the ditch and possibly getting hurt, or worse, drowning. And it's not just kids that are falling into the water.
"I've seen a car go into the ditch around that bend over there,” said Kenneth Harrison.
Since the boy fell in, Georgianna has been trying to contact a group called the Farmers Mutual Ditch Company about putting up a fence, but so far her calls have gone unanswered.
"It doesn't have to be a great big fence it just has to be big enough for a child not to go to or fall into it," she said.
But, even if a fence isn't built the biggest precaution parents can take is talking to their kids.
Make sure they know the dangers of playing near ditches. Because this water can move faster than you think.
