State Police investigating officer involved shooting in Tularosa

New Mexico State Police are investigating an officer involved shooting that occurred Tuesday evening outside Tularosa Elementary School.

Tularosa Police Department officers, along with Otero County Sheriff Deputies, were involved in an altercation with a man near the intersection of 1st Street and Mescalero. The man has been identified as Jesse Vigil of Tularosa.

Police say several rounds were fired during the altercation, and Vigil was struck by gunfire. He was pronounced dead on the scene by EMS personnel.

Because of the ongoing investigation, Tularosa Elementary School will be closed today.

New Mexico State Police is asking that anyone with information to call 575-437-1313.
