Firefighters have made progress on the Piedra Fire as it burns for a second day.

The fire is burning approximately 40 acres - down from 50 acres. Fire officials say 50 percent of the fire is contained.

95 firefighters and other personnel are battling the blaze. Helicopters are also being used for bucket drops.

The fire, which began around 2:30 a.m. Thursday, has been burning ponderosa pine and fir.

To protect the public, the Loop Road/Watershed is closed, as is the Piedra Lisa trail at both the north and south ends.

Fire officials urge the public to use extreme caution throughout the remaining open recreational areas.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
