Rio Rancho Fire Rescue and other city, county and state officials are investigating five fires that happened within two hours of each other within a few blocks on Friday morning. They say no natural cause for the fire, like lightning or heating, was present.

"There's no heating, there's no electricity so it does appear it could be human started," Rio Rancho Fire Rescue Chief Michael Meek said. "Now there's officers in the area, Sandoval and Rio Rancho, looking into commonalities at the scene."

Those commonalities could include footprints or tire tracks.

The first fire, which happened around 6:30 a.m., was a mobile home. Then another mobile home caught fire, as well as two piles of trash and brush and a mattress. Crews put out all the fires quickly, but the concern was how quickly they could spread in dry weather.

"It's very dry out here," Meek said. "The risk is for the vegetation to catch fire and spread- were lucky out here though that there's natural breaks with these roads."
