High-Risk Categories for Breast Cancer

All women over the age of 40 should have a clinical breast exam AND mammogram every year. Women who are in high-risk categories for breast cancer may consider mammogram screenings at an earlier age. The high-risk categories for breast cancer include:

  • Family History of Breast Cancer
  • Previous Abnormal Breast Biopsy
  • Having your first child after the age of 30
  • Never having children
  • Starting menstruation before the age of 12
  • Starting menopause after the age of 55

Remember, all women over the age of 20 should perform monthly self-exams. If you ever suspect a lump or change in your breast, contact your healthcare provider.

The Lovelace Breast Care Center at Lovelace Women’s Hospital offers comprehensive care – from early detection to treatment and aftercare – in one convenient location. Our team of breast health professionals will help you assess your risk of developing breast cancer, guide you through mammograms and clinical exams and teach you the proper method of breast self-examination. We also offer counseling, education and support programs.
