ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (AP) - Albuquerque officials say motorists who received red-light citations under the city's now-ended camera program still must pay the tickets though the program went away over a year ago.
Assistant City Attorney Greg Wheeler says the New Mexico Constitution requires the city to seek collection of unpaid citations. He says that trumps state law that generally bars legal action a claim once four years have passed.
The Albuquerque Journal reports that state District Court Judge Alan Malott had asserted in a recently published newspaper column that the four-year limit on collections efforts applies to a 2006 citation that he was issued.
Redflex Traffic Systems, the Scottsdale, Ariz.-based company that ran Albuquerque's red-light cameras, has hired another company to collect on unpaid citations.
