The New Mexico Gas Company wants to discontinue natural gas service to parts of San Juan County, including Navajo Lake State Park.

Maintenance Manager Allen Adkins said converting all 19 gas meters at Navajo Lake State Park to propane will be a lengthy process.

"It’s just going to cause an inconvenience for us," Adkins said.

In a deal being proposed, 63 customers in te county would lose gas service, including the lake.

Maintenance of these sites is going to be more expensive because propane costs more than natural gas, but it’s the services that maintenance provides that could affect visitors.

"It could possibly cause us to not have hot showers, and that is a very (big) inconvenience for all of our campers," Adkins said. "We provide supply water to Sims, Cottonwood and Navajo and they're huge buildings that we have to pump water out of the lake and process the water to drinking water standards."

Adkins says the lake doesn't want to eliminate services visitors love, but with giant maintenance facilities to heat it's going to be challenging.

"The shops are too big to feasibly heat with our budgets. Our budgets aren't going to increase," Adkins said.

The agreement has to be approved by the Public Regulations Committee. The hearing is set for July. Under the deal, the gas company would pay to convert gas meters to propane at Navajo Lake.
