The Central Consolidated School District is facing a $4 million budget shortfall for the upcoming school year. To make up for that loss, a lot of tough choices have to be made. One option is to close the district's only alternative high school.

But students, parents and teachers are spoke out against that proposal.

Closing the alternative high school is expected to save $1.7 million dollars, but students say they don't have anywhere else to go.

"Now you're telling me she's going to be a dropout because Shiprock High won't accept her," one parent said.

"This school has helped so many troubled kids, so many troubled kids that never got the help from Shiprock high school," said a student.

Career Prep is the only high school in the district that provides day care, which a lot of students rely on.

"And what are you going to do if everyone who's a teen parents and they don't have child care what are you going to do for child care when they go to Shiprock high school?" another student said.

District officials agree it's not the ideal situation, but they can't afford to keep the school open.

Career Prep High School Principal Joyce Rock said she worries students won’t succeed at the other high school, but she’s seen them grow stronger after getting the bad news.

"I've seen students that are so shy and would never get in front of a crowd or anything they're talking about their school because this is something they're passionate about and they've gained strength from one another," said Rock.

Students are using that strength to fight for a school that's given many of them a second chance.
