A man attempted to rob the Y-Mart on Alameda near Fourth Street before carjacking a vehicle, crashing it and killing himself Tuesday afternoon.

New details from the store owner let us in on what happened inside the store and in the final moments of the suspect’s life.

Yog Shrestha, Y-Mart owner, said the cashier who was working during the robbery told him the suspect didn’t demand anything. Instead, he said, the suspect began kicking and punching the cashier.

“He didn’t ask for money,” Shrestha said. “He told the cashier we will die together.”

That’s when the cashier says the suspect stole a customer’s blue sedan and took off. The suspect later crashed and rolled vehicle a mile down the road in front of an antique store on Fourth Street and Ranchitos. The suspect was pronounced dead at the scene.

Shrestha said he is relieved his customers and employees were unharmed. The blue car was totaled and authorities hauled it away early Tuesday evening.

Deputies said they were not chasing the suspect when he crashed and have not released the suspect’s name yet. Authorities have not released any information on the victim’s condition, but have said the victim was not in the car during the carjacking.
