SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - Nearly three dozen dogs that were taken from the Edgewood home of a former veterinarian will soon be up for adoption.

The dogs were released to the custody of the Santa Fe Animal Shelter on Wednesday, just days after the owner relinquished her rights to the majority of the animals.

In all, 48 dogs were seized in April from Debra Clopton. She's facing animal cruelty charges after authorities accused her of keeping the dogs in unsanitary conditions.

Clopton's attorney has said the charges are unwarranted.

The shelter's executive director, Mary Martin, says many of the dogs will be available within 48 hours.

Some are puppies and will require very little from new families aside from regular training and love. Others are timid or fearful and will require patience and training.
