ALAMOGORDO, N.M. (AP) - An Otero County jury has convicted a man of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence in the death of a Ruidoso woman five years ago.

Guillermo Ruiz was accused of stabbing 20-year-old Anabel Calzaba Alvardo numerous times in a secluded area near a travel center along U.S. 70 outside of Ruidoso in 2007.

Authorities say Ruiz took her body and her son across the border to Texas and into Mexico, where he burned it and abandoned the 2-year-old child. The boy was later reunited with grandparents.

A judge ruled last year that Ruiz was competent to stand trial.

The Alamogordo Daily News reports that Ruiz's attorney argued during the trial that Ruiz suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder and experienced a panic attack after Alvardo rejected his advances.
