More of us here in New Mexico are planning in-state vacations this year.

A new poll shows an 11 percent spike in the number of New Mexicans planning to hit the road for vacations this year as compared to last year, and that’s a pretty big increase. 55 percent say they’ll make more than three trips in-state and that’s for play, not work.

Helen Kushner has already got a plan.

“It’s a very nice place,” Helen said. “It’s Pecos. It’s nice cabins close to the river and you can spend the whole day doing things. Some people like fishing, they can go fishing. It’s just a nice place, very relaxing.”

“I am going on vacation next week,” said Yana Zemkoba. “But I’m going to Vegas. In New Mexico I really like Carlsbad, the caverns.”

The poll was sponsored by the Garrity Group, an Albuquerque public relations firm. Owner Tom Garrity said the economy may be driving the close-to-home vacation trend.

“It could still be the recession,” Garrity said. “People are seeing airfares creep up a little bit more. The recession is alive and well, so maybe they just want to explore New Mexico, and that’s not a fall-back position.”

The poll finds people in eastern New Mexico planning more in-state trips than people in other regions.
