Was it random or was an Albuquerque jogger targeted when he was shot?

KOB Eyewitness News 4 learned Justin Schroer only moved to Albuquerque a week ago to work at the UNM Cancer Center.

Police said he was shot Friday near UNM.

Police told KOB they will be interviewing Schroer tomorrow at UNM Hospital where he’s still recovering. Their main concern is whether or not someone targeted him specifically.

It’s usually a quiet neighborhood near UNM’s North Campus, but that changed around 6 a.m. Friday when neighbors woke up to gun shots.

“I was in bed sleeping,” said Rick Garcia.

Some neighbors KOB spoke with didn’t want to show their faces because they’re afraid the shooter will come back. “This is our home and the neighborhood is also our home,” said Kelly.

Police said Schroer had been jogging on Summit Place when someone pulled up, shot him and took off. “He was still on his feet, attempting to run and he said, help me,” added Kelly.

“He had a bullet hole here and it came out on the other side,” said Garcia.

“He was in pain. He was in shock,” said Kelly.

Police found four bullet shells on the scene. No one in the neighborhood knows who Schroer is, that’s why they don’t know if the shooting was random or if he was targeted.

It’s something police are still investigating.

“The next day we were out playing in our front yard. We have a 5-year-old and I kept thinking, is he safe? Should we be playing in the backyard? Something has changed my mindset. Are we safe here?” said Kelly.

Police have not named any possible suspects and no one has been arrested.
