School is over for many New Mexico kids, summer is just about here and it's starting to heat up.

In this week's Best Bites we're taking you to an ice cream and soda shop in the South Valley, that's sure to help you cool down.

Pop Fizz is tucked away in a small but brightly decorated storefront on Bridge near La Vega.

"It's a Mexican ice cream shop with an American soda shop feel," says Carlos Alvaraez, who co-owns Pop Fizz with his brother Lorenzo.

"Growing up as kids we grew up with this type of Mexican ice cream shop," Alvarez goes on to say.

The specialty at Pop Fizz is their paletas.

If you aren't familiar with paletas, think fresh fruit blended up and frozen into a popsicle.

"We try to source everything as much as we can locally, but of course you can't source tropical fruits locally," says Alvarez.

They're using grandma's recipes for the Mexican ice pops as well as the aguas frescas.

"We do horchata. I'm also doing Jamaica which is hibiscus flower. We have agua de tamarindo which is also very traditional," Alvarez says of the different flavors of aguas frescas.

On our visit, we tried one of their specialties which is strawberry-cucumber limeade.

The Alvarez brothers are also doing American soda shop favorites like floats.

You can do a standard root beer but we went with the chocolate soda and chocolate ice cream version.
