Most people wouldn’t even treat an animal the way this five-year-old girl was found living. Chaves County deputies say they found the girl caged in a room that was covered in feces.

It all started when deputies got a call about a fight at a home just outside of Roswell. Deputies say they started talking to a couple outside the home when they saw a little girl in the window banging on the glass for help.

"Something didn't look right with this child in this situation. So we went in to make sure this child was okay," said Lt. Britt Snyder of the Chaves County Sheriff Department.

“We walked into the house, I mean the house was just filthy, you could smell the urine and the feces,” said Raul Valderaz a Sergeant with the Criminal Investigation Department.

Deputies say the child was caged in her bedroom, naked and covered in feces. Once deputies were able to get inside they say the little girl grabbed one of them around the neck, wrapped her legs around him and wouldn’t let go.

"That tells us a lot right there. She was certainly glad to see him and she didn't know him at all," said Snyder.

Baby gates were stacked in the doorway from the floor to ceiling and screwed in so the child could not get out. But her mother says it was for her protection.

"She had baby gates up for her own safety. The reason why she didn't have her bed in her room is because she dismantled it, and I bought her a new bed and she chewed on the metal from that," said the girl’s mother.

The girl’s mother said her daughter has autism. We asked her about the urine and feces on the carpet, walls, and even on the girl’s toys.

"Yes it was dirty and my house was dirty. I do agree to that, but there are certain things that go along with handicapped children. She's handicapped and she does throw food on the floor and sometimes she does poop and pee on the floor, but that's because she is handicapped," said the mother.

The young girl old is now in CYFD custody.

The girl’s parents have not been arrested. The Sheriff’s Department is building its case and will forward that to the district attorney to determine if charges will be filed.
