While Jones was on the stand, prosecutors asked him about his work on the case and what led him to suspect Chavez committed murder. The defense spent their cross-examination attacking Jones' character.
Defense attorney for Levi Chavez, David Serna, spent his time showing jurors Detective Aaron Jones' background in law enforcement. Serna worked to show that Jones has had employment issues with his prior jobs.
Jones admitted he has worked for Los Angeles Police, the Lee County Sheriff's Office, and the Cuba Police Department before working for Valencia County.
"Then you filed a lawsuit as a pre-emptive strike to keep yourself from getting fired for what...the fifth time?" Serna asked.
Serna says years back, a judge ordered Jones to be mentally evaluated during his time with Valencia County.
"(the doctor) basically found you in a 5 page written report mentally unfit to be a police officer," Serna said.
In May 2010, the Valencia County Sheriff's Office suspended the investigation into Levi Chavez. Serna said that was because they ran out of leads. He said Jones went to the media shortly after, speaking out against that decision and was reprimanded by the Sheriff and Captain.
The defense is expected to continue questioning Jones Thursday.
