There are big developments in a story we have been following out of Roswell where a 5-year-old girl was found caged in a filthy room. The parents have been arrested.
Charity Calvert, 32, and Edward Romero, 64, have been charged with child abuse. The Roswell Sheriff’s Department brought the case to the district attorney’s office Friday and within an hour and a half the parents were in handcuffs.
Lt. Britt Snyder of the Chaves County Sheriff Department said, "The district attorney was pretty quick to agree that this case needed to be prosecuted."
Deputies told us they have been waiting on medical records to develop their case. Meanwhile we are learning more about the conditions inside the home Monday night. There were cockroaches found inside the child’s blanket in the room where she was found. Rodent droppings were found in drawers in the home. The shower head only released a trickle of water and mold was found in the shower.
"Children, Youth and Family obviously can't consider returning the child now because the parents are in jail," said Snyder.
The couple is being held in Chaves County Detention Center on a $500,000 bond each and the child remains in CYFD custody.
“The judge was pretty compelled because that's a pretty high bond given those charges," said Snyder.
The parents will get a preliminary hearing within the next ten days.
