A New Mexico fire chief responded to a house fire this week, only to find it was his own home up in flames.

James Sanchez is the volunteer fire chief for the Cuba Fire Department.  He says he was volunteering with the Cuba Police Department when he heard the call about the fire.

"As we started getting closer, I realized that it was my house that was on fire," Sanchez said.

Fire crews were able save a few mementos Sanchez has from his time in the U.S. Air Force and a neighbor opened a door to let his dog out.

"Got my little puppy, got the clothes on my back and I got good friends and family, good wife, good children and God will provide the rest," Sanchez said.

But beyond that, he said everything is gone.  His friends in Cuba have set up a website if you would like to help out Sanchez and his family, click here.
