Construction on the long anticipated I-25 Paseo project is expected to start in the fall right around Balloon Fiesta time.
There's no construction yet, but already, the Paseo/I-25 interchange is a nightmare for some commuters.
"Around like 4 or 5 coming west, I guess, it is slammed. It's just backed up," said Sydney Wright, who lives near the interchange.
"I'm always the person to avoid a certain time of the day. It's just less stress for me," said Jade Steinig, Albuquerque resident.
Like Steinig, other commuters try to avoid the area as much as possible, but sometimes, it's the only option. "I think it's a big concern in Albuquerque," commuter Debbie Beven said.
The New Mexico Department of Transportation told KOB Eyewitness News 4 construction will begin around Balloon Fiesta time, an event that brings thousands of people from all over the world to Albuquerque.
"We start at Tramway and you'll be okay and when you get close to I-25, you're backed up for a long time," added Bevan of the fiesta's traffic.
NMDOT said to avoid a bigger traffic problem, they'll begin minor construction during the fiesta such as prep work. The rest of the construction will continue after the fiesta wraps up.
