What was supposed to be a week filled with family fun almost turned deadly for Farmington resident, Ray Esquibel.

"They (doctors) didn't think he was going to live for the next 72 hours," said his brother, Lance Esquibel.

Ray was driving his family to San Antonio for vacation last month.

Somewhere near the Texas border another vehicle hit a giant rock that was along the road. The rock flew at ray's car and smashed through the windshield.

Ray's brother said Ray’s wife was able to steer the car off the road and call 911.

"She saw that his face has been smashed in by that grapefruit sized rock,” he said.

Ray had to be air lifted to a Lubbock hospital. Lance says his brother flat lined twice, but doctors were able to revive him. He was in a coma for 11 days and had to have reconstructive surgery on his face.

"They were actually still surprised that he lived just from the impact of that rock hitting him in the face."

Lance says the accident has been tough on his family, but the support from the community makes all the difference.

"I'm actually speechless people around us just coming together the love and support that they have shown for my brother and has been outstanding."

Ray has been in a hospital in Lubbock since the accident, but now he's strong enough to be moved to an Albuquerque hospital so he can be closer to home.

Ray’s Family started a Wells Fargo account to help pay medical bills. The account’s name is Pray for Ray. The family is also selling T-shirts that benefit the family at this link:  http://campaign.customink.com/prayforray

There will also be a benefit dinner at Chili’s in Farmington on July 15.
