CLOVIS, N.M. (AP) - A Curry County sheriff's official says an eastern New Mexico rancher and another man were wrestling for control of a rifle when the rancher was fatally wounded.

Undersheriff Wesley Waller says 73-year-old Max Allen of Bellview and the other man were involved in a dispute over farmland.

The Clovis News Journal reports that authorities know the identity of the other man and that he acknowledged being involved in the shooting that occurred Sunday in front of Allen's residence.

According to Waller, the other man called 911 after the shooting and was still at the scene when deputies arrived.
