Rain in the metro area a welcome sight

Rain pounding the metro area Friday caught some by surprise.

Others had been waiting for it, like the Barreras family who watched water surge through an arroyo near Carlisle and I-40.

Unfortunately, the National Weather Service says it won’t last. The storms are brief, and with the way the rain falls, it hardly sinks in to the 90 percent of the land in New Mexico plagued by extreme drought.

“Unfortunately in the summertime like this, we may get heavy rain but a lot of it runs off. It doesn't get into the soil like a nice gentle rain would, over a several hour period,” meteorologist Chuck Jones explained.

Plus, experts say, moisture streams went west from the Gulf of Mexico before coming here so we didn’t get as much as we could have.

This won’t be the last of the rain. The weather service is expecting more showers through next week.
