Albuquerque police shot and killed a man Friday night near the intersection of San Mateo and McLeod.

Witnesses say the man, described as a 60-year-old African-American, had threatened two kids with a butcher knife at the Circle K store at 5101 San Mateo NE.

When police approached the man, he threatened a male officer with the knife. A female officer then opened fire, firing four rounds at the man. Another officer may have fired at the same time but it's unclear at this time.

Police say the man may have had mental problems and had an encounter with him three weeks ago during a fight.

The man was pronounced dead at the hospital.

The intersection of San Mateo and McLeod is expected to be closed for several hours.
