A well-known Albuquerque drag racer died doing what he loved most.
52-year old Lawren Jones died in a crash at the Albuquerque Dragway on Friday.
People who spoke to KOB Eyewitness News 4 called him a legend and an inspiration.
Drivers at the Albuquerque Dragway took off with heavy hearts Saturday afternoon.
"We came out here in respect for Lawren Jones. He was a very dedicated racer, and I think everybody out here today.... is... racing with Lawren (chokes up) or a part of Lawren is going with them down that track, “says friend Chester Dominguez.
Jones was known for not just racing, but the way he built and tuned cars.
Sheriff’s Deputies say Friday night, Jones’ car went out of control, rolled a couple time and went over a barrier.
He was brought to the hospital where he later died.
“They shut down the race, the track was closed, and then the rain came and that done it for everybody,” says Dominguez.
Spectators say he knew what he was doing and that his car was one of the safest out there.
The cause of his crash was unclear.
Saturday, one crew honored Jones’ memory in a way they felt was fitting.
"Put a tribute on our truck just for him and his family, give him some peace," says Chester Dominguez.
Letting him hit the track one more time.
“This man was not only a great racer, in my eyes, he was the best tuner (chokes up) and it's just sad that we lost him,” says Dominquez.
The drag way has posted a message on its web page mourning Jones’ loss and racing message boards are packed with prayers for him and his family.
No one else was hurt by the accident.
