Heavy rains bearing down on U.S. Route 491 caused the roadway to collapse Friday night, creating a crevice that some have dubbed the "Naschitti sinkhole."

The Navajo Division of Transportation says the rain damaged an underground culvert, causing the roadway to collapse.

U.S. 491 is closed in both directions between Sheep Springs and Naschitti until further notice. Traffic will be diverted to the detour route along U.S. Highway 371 until repairs are completed on the roadway.

NMDOT and Skanska road crews are onsite repairing the damage. A second detour route could open as soon as Wednesday, July 10.
