Over the past week, we've seen something here in Albuquerque and throughout New Mexico that we love to see: Rain. But with the rain comes the standing water, and with the standing water comes the mosquitoes.

These annoying pests are coming back with a vengeance in some parts of the Duke City. With some parts of town getting up to two inches of rain, a hotbed of mosquitoes is expected to emerge, breed and feed--especially now.

Many experts, including Dr. Paul Smith of the Environmental Health Department, say that an increase in mosquitoes is expected as long as the rain continues.

"We’ve had so little larval habitat for the mosquitoes, but with this rainfall, we anticipate a big increase in habitat and so we do expect to an uptick in population."

Dr. Smith also mentioned some ways that residents, especially those living in the bosque, can combat the "bumps" in mosquito population and bites:

· Eliminate standing water. Mosquitoes breed and lay eggs in standing water.

· If your pet's water bowl is outside, clean it and add fresh water daily.

· Get rid of items that hold water, such as old tires, cans and bottles.

· Use mosquito repellent during outdoor activities.

· Try to stay inside during peak mosquito feeding times, which tend to be at dusk and dawn.
