SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) - The Santa Fe Plaza was crowded, the music was playing and then the evening festivities were interrupted by a bright flash and loud crack.
Lightning struck a cottonwood tree on the plaza's northeast corner Friday evening, sending branches and splinters of wood flying.
Santa Fe Fire Department Battalion Chief Carl Crook tells The New Mexican  that at least one man was cut by some of the debris and another suffered some breathing problems initially.
No one was seriously hurt.
Santa Fe parks and recreation staff will decide whether to remove some of the damaged limbs or take down the whole tree.
Thunderstorms circled parts of New Mexico on Friday, resulting in lightning flashes and rain.
Forecasters with the National Weather Service say more storms are expected Saturday.
