A virtual school for New Mexico students starts this fall. It's called New Mexico Connections Academy.

The free charter school, for students in grades 4 through 12, will not have a classroom. Instead, all they need is a computer.

Principal Athena Trujillo told KOB Eyewitness News 4 the school is just like a regular one with similar curriculum, but it's the access to the curriculum that sets them apart.

The school has teachers who provide live, online classes.

Trujillo said it's the perfect alternative for students who live in rural parts of the state.

It's also becoming popular for students who have busy schedules.

"We have kids who are involved in athletic competitions. We have baseball players. We have Olympians. We have actors. We have singers that need a different option for school because of their outside interest," Trujillo said.

Trujillo added that the school follows the Public Education Department guidelines.

School starts August 12.
