TAOS -- The pilot killed in a small plane crash in Taos has been identified.

The Santa Fe New Mexican reports 71-year-old Grant Besley was killed when the plane—flown by his friend, John Hillyard—landed short of the runway on July 10.

Witnesses told FAA investigators the plan was wobbling before hitting the ground near the runway.

Investigators said impact marks at the scene indicate the plan landed on its nose and right wing.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation.

A memorial service for the pilot is scheduled for Sunday at the Taos Regional Airport at 2 p.m.
