A former law enforcement officer is in police custody after a SWAT team standoff at this home on Wednesday.

Lt. William Pacheco of the Santa Fe County Sheriff's Office confirms George Smith is en route to the hospital to be evaluated. He will be sent to jail and charged with resisting arrest and battery on a household member.

Lt. Pacheco said Smith reported to the Santa Fe County Jail this morning to receive an electric monitoring device for a robbery charge. When his wife walked across the street to report a battery charge against him, Lt. Pacheco said Smith fled and barricaded himself inside his home on Calle de Sebastian.

A SWAT team was called since police knew Smith had access to firearms. However, Smith did not brandish a weapon at officers during the incident.

Smith was previously charged with holding up two pharmacies in the Santa Fe area last December. Investigators confirm Smith used to be a police officer in South Carolina.
