(NBC News) -- Whether you're trying to get fit, lose weight or just stay healthy new technology can help you reach your goals.

Wrist bands like the "Jawbone Up" can help you keep track of your calories, activity and even sleep with an app on your smartphone.

A light meter on the "Fitbit Flex" shows you how close you are to your daily goal.

Still, tech expert Bridget Carey points out these bands only count specific movements as real exercise.

"I can do 20 push-ups, but it thinks I did nothing, but I get major work out points for brushing my teeth," she explains.

A more detailed, and more expensive, option is the "Body Media Fit".

You may have seen contestants wearing it on "The Biggest Loser".

But these trackers are only helpful if you wear them all the time.

We're seeing updates on the old staples as well, like the "Smart Scale" that tracks your weight and body mass index.

"When you get more exact with things that can track your pulse, your heart rate, your body temperature, that's information where you can start having a discussion with your doctor about," Carey advises.

Also, fitness apps like Skimble and Nexercise are free and can help plan your workout, allow you to earn points and compete with friends.
