The vehicular homicide inmate mistakenly released from a Farmington jail is back behind bars.

Joe Gallegos turned himself in on Thursday afternoon. The San Juan County Detention Center says Gallegos was accidentally released July 15.

Gallegos is accused of running over and killing Delandra Pioche as she was walking last October.

Pioche’s mother told KOB Eyewitness News 4 he should've turned himself in sooner.

"He could've questioned his release: 'I'm on murder trial, are you really certain that I'm supposed to be released? I don't want to be on the run.' That kind of honest," she said.

The detention center says Gallegos was accidentally released because jail employees were confused about a new computer system.
