Students in one New Mexico school district could end up in the classroom year round.

Alamogordo’s Superintendent said the move could help improve student success.  But as KOB Eyewitness News 4 found out, students and parents are split on the idea.

This may be one of the last summer vacations for some students in Alamogordo.

"A bit conflicted," said Erica Croft, a student at Alamogordo High School. "I mean I love summer break. It gives you a time to actually step back from school because even during vacation it is still heavy on your mind, and summer you sort of get to forget about that.  At the same time that is sort of the problem because I know the first few weeks, I'm always struggling to remember math concepts or science things that I knew easily before."

Which is the reason why Superintendent Dr. George Straface wants year-round schooling.

"To improve student achievement through the use of time," said Straface.

Part of year-round school would increase the number of days in the classroom.  Right now the superintendent is considering a nine weeks on, three weeks off schedule.

KOB talked to parents about the idea.

"Well, I’m a former educator so I think it's a great idea,” said Vicki Croft.

"I’m not really for it, I like the kids having a summer break," said Dorella Molina.

For now students can enjoy their summer break.  A decision on year-round schools is still months away.

The Superintendent plans on gathering information to present to the School Board in January.  The district may also decide to do a trial next summer at a few elementary schools to see how the change affects student scores.
