There's a great need for minority organ donations in New Mexico, and nationwide, the need continues to grow.

Donations are way down. Health officials said it's easy to sign up, all you need is your ID and a computer.

In New Mexico, they are in desperate need of donor registration for minorities.

Right now in the state, there are about 1,000 people waiting for a transplant and about 76 are minorities. Nationwide, there's almost 120,000 men, women and kids who are on the list and minorities make up more than half of that.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 spoke to Donate Life New Mexico and they said the reasons why minorities refuse to donation is because of a lack of trust in the medical field and religious beliefs.

"We have a higher rate of diabetes and high blood pressure, you know, within our state and that causes kidney failure so we are in tremendous need to match and transplant those minorities on the waiting list," said Maria Sanders of Donate Life New Mexico.

If you're a minority and want to register, visit www.nmdonor.org.
