Despite the threat of rain, community members gathered at the Mattress Firm Warehouse Thursday to help KOB Eyewitness News 4 stuff backpacks for deserving kids.

About 62 percent of students in the Albuquerque Public School District qualify for reduced or free meals, and many parents are unable to provide basic school supplies their children need to be successful in the classroom.
That's where KOB's Backpacks 4 Kids comes in. Mattress Firm donated 3,000 backpacks to get kids ready for the 2013-2014 school year. With generous community donations of school supplies, these backpacks can be loaded up and given to children from charities like the Boys and Girls Club and El Ranchito de Los Nino.
Volunteers are stuffing backpacks on Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Mattress Firm, located at 4378 Alexander Blvd NE.
KOB and Mattress Firm will also continue to accept donations until Saturday. For a full list of supplies needed and locations to donate, click here.
Please consider supporting this great community effort to show all our kids we care about them and their success in school!
