An armed man was killed by Bernalillo County Sheriff's deputies in the East Mountains on Sunday night.

Deputies were called out to a domestic incident in Sandia Park in the East Mountains. The sheriff said deputies had dealt with the man in the past.

When they arrived, the man was holding a gun, but not threatening deputies. The sheriff's office said deputies tried to defuse the situation by leaving, but that the man then threatened a deputy.

Shots were fired and the man was killed.

New Mexico State Police and the Albuquerque Police Department will handle the investigation. The deputy is on standard leave.
