Identity theft is a crime sweeping the nation, and of the states with the most reports of this crime, New Mexico ranks 18th.

The FBI says many officers were not taught about identity theft, so now, agents are training local law enforcement how to spot and solve these crimes.

Albuquerque officers met downtown on Monday to learn about devices used to commit fraud—many of which are bought and sold online.

Justin Feffer with the FBI told KOB Eyewitness News 4 that he had been to many crime scenes with officers who had no idea what a credit card skimming device looked like and did not know it was used to steal people's information.

"Law enforcement agents are not software engineers or computer scientists and we really need a class to catch them up on the technical means that suspects are using," he said.

The FBI also provided tips for citizens to follow to avoid becoming a victim of fraud. Feffer advises to check accounts often and to report anything suspicious to your bank and law enforcement.
