It’s an emotional day for Steve Henderson and his family. Steve’s son, Jeremy, is coming home from Afghanistan. He’s been planning a celebration for weeks and has been keeping it a secret from his wife Kathi.
"My poor wife thinks we're not paying our bills. I’d get phone calls at night and she was there and I’m trying to surprise her and I’d be like 'I’m pretty sure I paid that but I’ll check into that'. It was Blue Star Moms calling to talk about the cake," said Steve.
Jeremy knew he was coming here to surprise his mom, but what he didn't know was that the surprise was also for him.
Jeremy thought his homecoming would only be a family affair. He didn't realize there would be this many people to welcome him home.
When sheriff's deputies pulled him over to give him a police escort into town, he thought he was being arrested.
"Well, they came up to me and said they had to take me and escort me, and I thought you guys got the wrong guy there's been a mix-up," he said.
And for his mom Kathi, this is a day she's been waiting for, for almost a year.
"It’s so good to see his face and know he's safe. You know, nothing like hugging that baby. I don't care how big he is, nothing like holding him and knowing he's ok," she said.
For Jeremy being away from his family was the hardest part. But seeing all his friends and family here today makes all the difference.
"Just… It feels amazing to be home and to see the support group is even more amazing and that's what keeps us fighting and to know that people are still here and thinking and praying about it, that's what keep us going," said Jeremy.
