A New Mexico Police Department that was already in turmoil is now, according to officers, in a tailspin.
People on the inside of the Ruidoso Downs Police Department said it’s falling apart now that police chief Doug Babcock left.
"We received a letter from him Friday saying he was resigning. Didn't have a clue. Didn't even know, didn't give us a heads up or anything," said Mayor Gary Williams. "It's disappointing for us because we were expecting him to work through the issues we had, the problems we had, solve it and get us back on solid footing. I guess he decided he didn't want to do it."
Two weeks ago the city placed Babcock on probation after officers’ alleged he disregarded their safety and welfare.
Two officers, April Payan and Alex Trujillo, met with KOB Eyewitness News 4 while off duty Tuesday.
"We need help, this department is falling apart at the seams," said Trujillo.
The officers said since their letter of complaint to the city a few weeks ago, little has changed.
“The big issues have not been addressed at all," said Trujillo.
The city has placed Corporal Chris Rupp in Tuesday as temporary chief.
“I’m looking forward to serving the officers and the citizens of this community and doing the best job we can for the city of Ruidoso Downs," said Rupp.
The mayor said he is actively searching for a new chief.
"That is going to be an extensive search because we want to bring somebody in that is capable and has strong leadership skills," said Williams.
