PORTALES, N.M. (AP) - Some rural residents in one eastern New Mexico county are being advised to boil their water.

KENW reports the boil-water advisory was issued earlier this week for an estimated 1,440 households that are served by the Roosevelt County Water Co-op.

Co-op Manager Clarence Smith says the order will remain in place at least through Monday.

Tests done Tuesday and Wednesday during routine maintenance revealed E. coli bacteria in the system.

That prompted city officials in nearby Portales to test their water system and wells, but nothing was found.

Roosevelt County Water Co-op officials are contacting rural water customers primarily by phone to make sure they know about the boil advisory.

State officials say testing will continue until no further threat of contamination remains.
