Classrooms in one New Mexico school district are filling up fast, and the school district is trying to keep up.

“Crowded” is the word superintendent Gary Perkowski is using to describe the Carlsbad School District.

"We have some elementary schools that are going to be overloaded this year," said Perkowski.

Overloaded is right.  The district has more than 200 new students this year and classrooms are getting crammed.

Riverside Elementary is getting hit the hardest.

KOB Eyewitness News 4 went inside a portable at the school Wednesday where 30 students were inside.

"In some grades almost all of them are overloaded and we're going to have to adjust that so that we meet state standards on the number of people that we can, the number of students we can have in each class," said Perkowski.

The reason for the growth the Carlsbad school superintendent said is the oil industry.  The families just keep moving in.

“It’s good for the city, it's good for the county, it's not all that good for the schools.  We want the kids, but we don't get the funding," said Perkowski.  “It's a lot of students in a short amount of time."

Perkowski said the district is working to hire more teachers and get more portables at schools like Riverside.

The district also plans to ask the state for more funding.

“We’re trying to figure out the best approach to this so we can help solve the problem,” said Perkowski.

Carlsbad’s superintendent said more funding would also help them renovate several schools in the district.
