SUNDAY UPDATE 10:30am:  The deceased male has been identified as Calvin Pohl.

An early morning house fire in Northeast Albuquerque claimed the life of a man, while his elderly mother managed to escape the flames.

The distraught woman walked back to her house early Saturday morning to see what was left.

She managed to run out of her burning house hours earlier, but her son in his 60’s was not so lucky.

Friend and next door neighbor, Mickey Hagg II says the woman has lived in the house since 1974.

"Basically what happened was she woke up. She smelled smoke and her son's room was on fire. So she came out and there was so much smoke she went down to this house down here and got [neighbors]," said Hagg II.

Albuquerque firefighters were called to the single family home in the 5200 block of Chambers Place NE at around 1:45 a.m.

The woman heard her smoke alarm go off, ran outside and told firefighters her son was still inside, said AFD.

After an extensive search, they found the man’s body.

Hagg II said this is not the first son she has lost in a fire.

"It's really sad because her youngest boy had passed away in a fire as well. Yeah, in a car accident and the car caught fire," he said.

A crime scene specialist and the OMI are looking to see exactly how he died.

"The few conversations I had with him he was pretty much to himself,” said Hagg II.

The neighbor also believes the victim was a smoker.

Many residents in the mostly elderly neighborhood heard the tragic news later in the morning.

"Well... That's sad. It’s just been a real quiet neighborhood around here and we don't get much action," said neighbor William Durkin.

Firefighters managed to put the fire out in five minutes.

The cause is still under investigation.
