School has already started in Dexter, but the football team doesn’t have a field to practice on. That’s because it is covered in dirt after construction was delayed.
Some parents are worried it’s not going to be safe to play on.
“Dirt here after the sun bakes it is like concrete. There is no padding, and I don't know if you've ever gotten tackled on concrete, it’s not good,” said Kevin Bonner. Bonner has two twin boys, both seniors on the Dexter High football team.
“You know my boys being seniors, I’m concerned that it takes away from their year," said Bonner.
He said the field should have been finished months ago.
“From the standpoint of planning, maybe it should be done earlier in the year. Instead of taking away from the kids that have worked their behinds off all year long," said Bonner.
“Just like most projects, things didn't go as fast as we wanted it to,” said Superintendent Lesa Dodd.
Dodd said 30 truckloads of dirt were brought in this summer to level out the middle of the field. A new track was also put in, in the middle of July so crews weren’t able to get to the football field.
"There is always delays getting the dirt here, getting it spread out. You know our maintenance men we only have a handful and we had air conditioning and roof situations going on in the summertime. So, I can’t give you a definite answer on the delay," said Dodd.
“Like I said, I’m not the only parent that's upset about it. We just need to fix it and move on,” said Bonner.
The district said the field passed an inspection. That means the team will be able to play its’ first home game next Friday against Texico. If the field wasn’t ready in time, Dexter would have had to give up its’ home field advantage and play in Texico.
