RIO RANCHO -- Unofficial results from the Rio Rancho special election show voters chose not to reduce a gross receipts tax.

Voters were asked whether to reduce a gross receipts tax that currently pays for higher education facilities.

The measure was defeated by approximately 1,100 votes. The unofficial results show 2,480 voted "yes" for the reduction while 3,611 voted "no."

If the measure had passed, the gross receipts tax would have dropped from a fourth of one percent to an eighth of one percent.

Out of 56,000 registered voters in Rio Rancho, only about 10 percent came out to the polls. The election results will be certified as official on Aug. 23.
