Flies swarming all over Albuquerque

With the good comes the bad.  We need the rain, and we've received plenty of it lately, but it comes with a price, and it's in the form of flies.

Over the past month, Albuquerque has been swarmed by flies, specifically field and house flies. Many residents have noticed and hate it.

One person in particular was Velma Sepulveda, who was with her family at Tingley Beach.  "There's so many of them. It's like you can't go outside. They're all over my screen door. I mean, everywhere,” she said.

The reason why there have been so many more flies is moisture, and lots of it!

In July, the metro area saw more than an inch of rain, and that, in combination with all the organic matter we have, such as decaying wood and grass clippings, have been the perfect environment for a fly population explosion.

Not only can flies be a nuisance, but also a health hazard.

They can spread diseases such as dysentery, which can cause severe diarrhea, fever, and abdominal pains, cholera, which can bring severe dehydration and vomiting, and Typhoid fever, which can lead to extreme weight loss, headaches, and sometimes, bloody noses.

We won't really see a drop-off in the flies until early October, or the first freeze.
