Santa Fe mayoral candidate Javier Gonzales came out to the community in a blog post on Wednesday.
According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, the former Democratic Party chairman wrote about growing up gay and the struggle that came with accepting his sexual orientation.
"You see, when you come from a traditional family with deep roots in this community, the process of accepting that you are gay is complicated with fears about disappointing those you love, or becoming disconnected with a sense of place that is as much a part of me as my sexuality," he wrote.
Gonzales' post was featured on the website FamiliaEsFamilia.org, a support network for gay and lesbian Latinos.
The New Mexican reports Gonzales is now one of two openly gay candidates running for mayor of Santa Fe, the other being City Councilor Patti Bushee.
