A veteran Santa Fe police officer has been put on administrative leave after being accused of sexual assault.

The department confirmed a female patrol officer reported the incident about two weeks ago. The case is now in the hands of New Mexico State Police.

The veteran officer has not been identified, but Police Chief Ray Rael said he had been with the department since 1999.

"It's still an active investigation and being worked by our agents," State Police Sgt. Emmanuel Gutierrez told the Santa Fe New Mexican. "Upon completion of the report, it will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office for final review and disposition. This is all the information that can be currently divulged on this."
